What Is a Percent Off Calculator?

A percent off calculator is a simple tool that tells you how much you'll pay for a product after a discount, and how much money you save in the process. It's useful for shopping, budgeting, evaluating sale prices, and comparing deals — especially when multiple discounts apply.

How Percent Off Works

A "percent off" discount reduces the price of a product by a certain percentage of its original price. For example, 20% off a $279 item means you subtract 20% of $279 from the original price:

20% of $279 = 0.20 Ɨ 279 = $55.80
$279 āˆ’ $55.80 = $223.20

So you save $55.80 and pay $223.20. The calculator uses this same logic to derive any missing value from the other two — original price, percent off, or final price.

Stackable Additional Discounts

A stackable additional discount is a further percentage off applied after the first discount has been taken. This is common in retail: for example, a store runs a 20% off sale and you also have a coupon for an additional 15% off. The coupon applies to the already-discounted price — not to the original price.

Original price: $279
First discount: 20% → $223.20
Second discount (15% of $223.20): $33.48
Final price: $223.20 āˆ’ $33.48 = $189.72
Total saved: $55.80 + $33.48 = $89.28 (32% off total, NOT 35%)

This is a common point of confusion. Two successive discounts are not additive. The combined discount is always slightly less than the sum of the two percentages.

The effective combined discount can be calculated with this shortcut:

Combined % = 1 āˆ’ (1 āˆ’ p₁) Ɨ (1 āˆ’ pā‚‚)
For 20% and 15%: 1 āˆ’ 0.80 Ɨ 0.85 = 1 āˆ’ 0.68 = 0.32 → 32%

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are two 20% discounts the same as 40% off?
A: No. Two 20% discounts result in a 36% total discount, not 40%. See the section above for the formula.

Q: Can a percent off ever exceed 100%?
A: In practice, no — a 100% discount means the item is free. This calculator caps discounts at 100%.

Q: Does this calculator include sales tax?
A: No. All prices are pre-tax. To calculate after-tax totals, multiply the final price by (1 + tax rate).

Q: Is my data stored anywhere?
A: No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
