What is a Currency Calculator?

A currency calculator is a tool that converts the value of one currency into another using the current exchange rate. Whether you are travelling abroad, shopping from an international store, sending money to family overseas, or running a business that deals with foreign clients, a currency converter helps you understand exactly how much your money is worth in another country's currency.

Our free online currency calculator supports over 160 world currencies — from major ones like the US Dollar (USD), Euro (EUR), British Pound (GBP), and Japanese Yen (JPY), to exotic ones like the Afghan Afghani (AFN), Zimbabwean ZiG (ZWG), and even precious metals such as Gold (XAU) and Silver (XAG), plus Bitcoin (BTC).

How to Use the Currency Calculator

Important Key Terms

Exchange Rate — The value of one currency expressed in terms of another.

Forex (Foreign Exchange Market) — A global, decentralized, over-the-counter market for trading currencies. It is the largest financial market in the world, with trillions of dollars traded daily.

Bid Price — The price a buyer is willing to pay for a unit of currency.

Ask Price — The price a seller is willing to accept for a unit of currency.

Bid-Ask Spread — The difference between the bid and ask price. Brokers and banks profit from this spread.

Pip — The smallest unit of value in a bid-ask spread. For most currency pairs, one pip equals 0.0001.

Currency Pair — A quote of the relative value of one currency against another (e.g., EUR/USD).

Base Currency — The first currency in a currency pair (always equals one unit).

Quote Currency — The second currency in a pair; shows how much is needed to buy one unit of the base currency.

Major Currencies — The most traded currencies: USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, AUD, CAD, CHF, and CNY.

What is Currency?

Currency is a universal medium of exchange for goods and services in an economy. It has been used for at least 3,000 years — before coins, people used bartering (direct exchange of goods without money). Throughout history, currency has taken many forms: cowrie shells, salt, tea bricks, gold, silver, and even 8-ton carved limestone rocks.

History of Currency

The first "official" currency was minted in the 7th century BC by King Alyattes of Lydia (modern-day Turkey). The Lydian stater was the first standardized coin. Paper currency was invented in China and brought to Europe by Marco Polo after his travels to Asia.

Modern Currency

Modern currency is fiat money — declared by governments to be legal tender but not backed by a physical commodity like gold. Most currency exists digitally in bank accounts; physical cash is increasingly rare thanks to debit cards, credit cards, and mobile payments.

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies operating independently of a central bank, using encryption and blockchain technology. Bitcoin (BTC) is the most well-known, followed by Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and Ripple (XRP). This calculator currently supports Bitcoin conversion.

Forex and Exchange Rates

Exchange rates fluctuate constantly based on supply and demand in the forex market. The most common forex transactions involve the US Dollar paired with the Euro, Japanese Yen, or British Pound Sterling. Each forex quote has a base currency and a quote currency — for example, EUR/USD 1.366 means one euro is worth $1.366 USD.

When buying foreign currency, you'll see two prices: the buying rate (bid) and the selling rate (ask). Brokers sell high and buy low, so the ask is always higher than the bid.
