How to convert RGB to HSL
- Enter red, green and blue values from 0 to 255.
- Click Convert.
- Read the hue (degrees), saturation (percent) and lightness (percent).
How the conversion works
Divide each channel by 255, then find the largest and smallest values. Lightness is their average. Saturation depends on the difference between them, and hue is the angle on the color wheel.
Example: rgb(255, 87, 51) is hsl(11, 100%, 60%).
Why use HSL?
- It is easy to make a color lighter or darker by changing only the lightness.
- Changing the hue gives related colors, useful for building color schemes.
- Modern CSS supports it directly: hsl(11 100% 60%).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between HSL and HSV?
HSL uses lightness, where 50% is a pure color and 100% is white. HSV uses value (brightness), where 100% is the brightest version of the color.
What range does hue use?
Hue is an angle from 0 to 360 degrees. 0 is red, 120 is green and 240 is blue.
